intro

 Welcome,
to this beginning.

‘Tykhe Dice’ may be an unfamiliar term today but that is changing fast.

Divination with Tykhe Dice.

Chance, fortune and the elements flow through us in a constant stream of energy. Where we are and the path we are taking are both visible and invisible. Our lives are in constant flux, as the energies mix and flow in a spectrum of possibilities.

Tykhe dice reveal the aspects of ourselves in the roll of the dice. Where we are, what influences us and our possible future. We can influence the hand of fate, our fortune and future. As the dice spread across the casting cloth; the Zodiac, Elements, Sacred Planets, Metals, Aspects (of life) and Runes are revealed.

“With these three dice cast their masculine/feminine balance, distance from the center and proximity to each other you may get a feel for what the dice are telling you at an intuitive level or maybe guided by what you know of the meanings of these symbols along with the question asked there are however further layers of meaning that may be added by looking at the positioning of the dice on the board with relation to the elements, zodiac signs and planets all having a possible effect on the reading as you will notice only the seven magical planets are incorporated within the Tykhe board.”  Llwybr Arianllwynog 2014

Philosophy of Tykhe dice.

Based on established symbols with intuitive meaning, I felt the need to produce an easy to use set of die that required little prior knowledge. Hopefully the familiar symbols ‘suggest’ the meaning and before long you will be using them without constant reference to the definitions written down.

The symbols are bold and clear, making their use in low light and at any angle comfortable; especially in candlelight. Harmony across the symbols and the colours used help the perceived meanings. The history of these symbols and their use in divination stretches back many centuries.

Each symbol has four elements: The background of all the dies is a single traditional woodcut. Next the ambient colour gives the mood of the die, its emotional context if you like.  On top of this is the symbol, then finally…on the top layer, each die carries a runic symbol from the Germanic Futhark set.
There are 24 rune symbols in total.
The rune is not intended to ‘agree’ with the symbol or the ‘mood’ but instead add another aspect for those who want to use it exclusively to cast the dice in the runic way; perhaps ignoring the symbols altogether.

sunriseThe Tykhe casting board contains many motifs, divination methods: Elements, sacred Planets, Zodiac, Constellations, Metals, Runes.  The board is divided laterally, and equally: male, female, Sun and Moon. The cast incorporates Heliocentric Orbits, radiating from the centre or ‘self’. This illustrates: relationships, spatial influences, male or female influence and there is a wild card; Tykhe.

Why have all these aspects?

It isn’t intended that all these aspects are connected together in every reading…but they are there, before you, as they are in everyday life. We all make decisions of which to notice, ignore, follow or dismiss. We are influenced by our emotional state, the effects of others, the weather…the list is endless; so it is with Tykhe dice. When you cast the die what falls before you will make a pattern in your mind, it with suggest relationships, paths, ideas, emotions, yes even fears. Which will depend on you, your mood, and your circumstances, these are constantly changing, even from hour to hour.

That is why Tykhe dice contain so many elements of divination?

Astrology: Often people say:
Horoscopes in the papers are ‘silly’ nonsense, ‘how can any of that be true,’ they argue.
But do they ever read them…yes, everyone does sometimes. So why do they? To pass the time, curiosity, or  just to scoff.  Now, does that Horoscope effect their day…of course it does! Like the butterfly effect on the weather, they are changed just by reading it, informed, reflective of themselves and their life. They may feel that the Horoscope couldn’t possible be true…but seeds are sown and emotions changed. Big changes are born from small decisions, we all know that.

Who doesn’t know their own birth sign?

The debate continues about Astrology but whatever your opinion there is little doubt that it continues to influence our concept of reality. My personal view is that ‘when’ you are born does have an effect on your personality and therefore your life, aspirations and values. To have memories of summer birthdays in the warm sunshine rather that cold dark winter days models perception, relationships and outlook. Whether we gravitate toward a collective ‘type’ of our sign is too complex a question to ask of either the conscious or subconscious.
One thing is beyond doubt, we all live under the canopy of the 12 constellations with the sun at the centre of our orbit and the moon exerting great influence. The Tykhe casting cloth represents the firmament. How the patterns are played out is another matter; and that is where Tykhe dice resides.

Start using Tykhe Dice

Some will cast Tykhe Dice on a plain table, others will carry them in a pocket and ‘draw’ them one at a time. This is fine of course…and one of my favourite ways of working I have to admit. At first casting on the Tykhe board may not yield much for you but that will change be sure. Aspects of your everyday life will begin to connect with things you cast and your understanding, appreciation and partnership with the die will grow.

Almost everything you want to know in your life is right in front of you…if you can just see it.
That is my belief. Tykhe dice add a random arrangement of ‘chance’ largely (but not completely) out of your control. On that a possible future, based on where you are right now. However, what you do will affect that future.

Are Tykhe Dice accurate? Yes almost always…because you are the person who decides what the cast means…and you are the person in control of your life… well mostly of course.
How can they be accurate? Because almost every element of life, culture, tradition, human desires, frailties and hopes are brought into play in a cast. Every cast has an infinite number of permutations…which ones you see will come from within, you will guide your life.

Understanding Tykhe Dice

sunriseLlwybr Arianllwynog    9 Sept 2014
Tykhe and the astrological symbolism of the tykhe board may be seen as astrology of spiritual influences, whilst we may enter into the realm of divination using the power of judgement and prediction, within tykhe we endeavour to meaningfully interpret a given set of astrological symbols along with those of the tykhe dice to a unique human situation allowing the revelatory light of the whole system of stars and planets to describe another solution within reality using these symbols as a metaphoric mirror to carry out the reading and infer it back to actual reality therefore it is not only the psychic, but more the psyche of the reader for until the reader relays the symbols significance there can be no significance, for we are not looking at the time element of astrology as found within the ‘birth seed’ for within tykhe time is infinitely flexible so it remains the work of the reader to bring both the psychic and emotion int the symbolic equation, this may be seem as ritual as the reader brings themselves to align with both the person and the symbolic material.

The dice

Based on established symbols with an intuitive meaning, I felt the need to produce an easy to use set of die that didn’t require prior knowledge; or hopefully too long casting without constant reference to the meanings of the symbols. In addition, the symbols are bold enough to be read at any angle and in low light, especial candlelight. Colours too, are in harmony with the perceived meanings.

What’s in a dice, how are the symbols arrived at?

Each symbol is built from four elements:
The background, all dies are created from one traditional woodcut.
An appropriate ambient colour gives the ‘mood’ of the symbol.
Next is the symbol itself
Finally each carries a runic symbol from the Futhark set. There are *24 rune symbols in all. The rune is not intended to ‘agree’ with the symbol or the ‘mood’ but it adds another aspect for those who want to use it OR to cast the dice in the runic way; ignoring the symbols altogether if you wish. (*In addition to the dice the Tykhe casting board contains all 24 runes also.)

Using Tykhe Dice

Each of the four dice represents an aspect of the throwers situation.
This form of divination has much in common with other common
(and ancient) divination methods including runes.
Symbols are used to represent the different aspects of the throwers life.

The first dice represents the ‘Current Situation’
The second dice represents everyday matters, ‘love and direction.’
The third dice represents, ‘finances and opportunity.’

In addition to the ‘symbols’ on each dice, a Futhark symbol is shown on
each face. All 24 Futhark (rune) symbols are represented in this set of dice, if you wish to use  these dice using rune symbols only.

The fourth dice represents a ‘context’ and further guidance in reading the
dice once thrown. This dice is optional and is, as is the case in Tarot, best
employed by more experienced readers. However, the choice is always yours.

“Lay out the three dice on your chosen flat surfacePick up the dice in order first, second and third, roll them gently in your covered hand(s) then roll all three onto your ‘reading’ surface. If you wish to use the four dice, pick it  up and roll it now.”

*The arrangement of symbols on each dice is different for each Tykhe dice set.
No two sets have their ‘faces’ arranged in the same order or orientation.
Every set of Tykhe Dice is unique.
